Elaine Housten fue testigo de muchos hitos durante sus 43 a\u00f1os como enfermera en Stanford. Trabaj\u00f3 principalmente como enfermera quir\u00fargica en el hospital de adultos y colabor\u00f3 en el primer trasplante de coraz\u00f3n humano exitoso en los Estados Unidos en 1968, realizado por el famoso cirujano card\u00edaco Norman E. Shumway, MD, PhD.<\/p>\n

\u201cComo enfermera, sent\u00eda que estaba participando en cirug\u00edas de vanguardia\u201d, afirma.<\/p>\n

La extraordinaria carrera de Elaine comenz\u00f3 en Toronto, Canad\u00e1, donde trabaj\u00f3 con el Dr. William Mustard en el Hospital para Ni\u00f1os Enfermos. Mustard desarroll\u00f3 el procedimiento Mustard en 1963 para corregir una cardiopat\u00eda cong\u00e9nita llamada s\u00edndrome del beb\u00e9 azul. Posteriormente, se mud\u00f3 a Palo Alto para trabajar en Stanford y conoci\u00f3 a su difunto esposo, Sam Housten.<\/p>\n

Cuando Elaine dio a luz a su hijo Alexander en Stanford, experiment\u00f3 lo que era ser paciente en lugar de cuidadora. \u00abTodo iba bien hasta que naci\u00f3 y nos dimos cuenta de que no respiraba correctamente\u00bb, cuenta.<\/p>\n

Alexander fue trasladado de urgencia a la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatales (UCIN), donde los m\u00e9dicos descubrieron que ten\u00eda una hernia diafragm\u00e1tica, una abertura en el diafragma que provocaba que sus intestinos se desplazaran hacia el t\u00f3rax. \u201cLa gente de la UCIN fue incre\u00edblemente amable\u201d, dice Elaine. \u201cLos m\u00e9dicos se deten\u00edan a hablar conmigo. Como madre, no podr\u00eda haber recibido mejor apoyo\u201d.<\/p>\n

Para alegr\u00eda de Elaine, Alexander volvi\u00f3 a casa once d\u00edas despu\u00e9s y no present\u00f3 ninguna otra complicaci\u00f3n. \u00abHoy tiene 44 a\u00f1os y est\u00e1 estupendamente\u00bb, dice la orgullosa madre.<\/p>\n

Elaine estaba tan agradecida por la excepcional atenci\u00f3n y recuperaci\u00f3n de su hijo que, a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, quiso devolver el favor. Tras consultar con su asesor financiero, Elaine decidi\u00f3 donar a trav\u00e9s de un fideicomiso de remanente caritativo (CRT). Este fideicomiso le proporciona ingresos durante su vida, y el saldo se destinar\u00e1 a las organizaciones ben\u00e9ficas que ella elija, incluido el Hospital Infantil Lucile Packard de Stanford, tras su fallecimiento.<\/p>\n
