Como estudiante de grado en la Universidad de Cambridge, pas\u00f3 un a\u00f1o en el Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico de Massachusetts (MIT) para explorar la bioingenier\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c9l estaba enganchado.<\/p>\n<p>Tras graduarse en la universidad, Skylar-Scott regres\u00f3 al MIT para cursar su doctorado, donde utiliz\u00f3 t\u00e9cnicas de impresi\u00f3n l\u00e1ser para crear peque\u00f1os tejidos biol\u00f3gicos. Sin embargo, para que estos tejidos fueran \u00fatiles en medicina, Skylar-Scott tuvo que encontrar la manera de mantener vivos los tejidos grandes y gruesos \u2014con vasos sangu\u00edneos tridimensionales y redes vasculares que les proporcionaran nutrientes y ox\u00edgeno\u2014, al igual que los tejidos humanos.<\/p>\n<p>Como posdoctorado en Harvard, lo logr\u00f3. Utilizando un sistema de bioimpresi\u00f3n 3D pionero, produjo tejido vivo de un cent\u00edmetro de grosor, con su propia red de vasos sangu\u00edneos para mantenerlo vivo. Fue un avance revolucionario en el camino hacia la creaci\u00f3n de tejidos terap\u00e9uticamente funcionales.<\/p>\n<h3>Un enfoque en los beb\u00e9s que nacen con defectos card\u00edacos<\/h3>\n<p>Las cardiopat\u00edas cong\u00e9nitas (CC) son las m\u00e1s comunes entre todos los defectos de nacimiento. Tres de cada diez beb\u00e9s que nacen con una CC no llegan a los 18 a\u00f1os, incluso si reciben la mejor atenci\u00f3n disponible.<\/p>\n<p>Si bien la cirug\u00eda puede salvar la vida, a menudo no es una cura permanente. &quot;Me qued\u00f3 claro&quot;, dice Skylar-Scott, &quot;que la manera m\u00e1s efectiva de impactar con la tecnolog\u00eda de bioimpresi\u00f3n 3D era incursionar en el campo card\u00edaco&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHemos llegado al l\u00edmite de lo que podemos hacer con la cirug\u00eda y las herramientas convencionales\u201d, explica el Dr. Frank Hanley, jefe de Cirug\u00eda Card\u00edaca Pedi\u00e1trica del Centro Card\u00edaco Infantil Betty Irene Moore y profesor titular de Salud Infantil del Dr. Lawrence Crowley. \u201cNecesitamos ir m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del tratamiento y el manejo de las cardiopat\u00edas infantiles y eliminarlas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>La bioimpresi\u00f3n y la implantaci\u00f3n de tejidos sanos que puedan crecer junto con el ni\u00f1o permitir\u00e1n reparaciones duraderas de corazones da\u00f1ados, eliminando la necesidad de las m\u00faltiples cirug\u00edas que suelen sufrir los ni\u00f1os con cardiopat\u00edas cong\u00e9nitas. Y la impresi\u00f3n 3D es la tecnolog\u00eda ideal para lograrlo, ya que permite producir estructuras tridimensionales complejas con las redes vasculares que requieren los tejidos card\u00edacos vivos.<\/p>\n<p>En julio pasado, Skylar-Scott se uni\u00f3 al equipo multidisciplinario BASE (Ciencia B\u00e1sica e Ingenier\u00eda) de Stanford, compuesto por m\u00e9dicos, cient\u00edficos e ingenieros que trabajan en conjunto hacia una visi\u00f3n audaz: curar la enfermedad card\u00edaca cong\u00e9nita.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl momento es ahora. Los avances en edici\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica, inform\u00e1tica y bioingenier\u00eda nos impulsan con nuevas y audaces iniciativas que aplicaremos directamente a la pr\u00e1ctica cl\u00ednica\u201d, afirma la Dra. Marlene Rabinovitch, directora de BASE y <em>Profesor Dwight y Vera Dunlevie de Cardiolog\u00eda Pedi\u00e1trica<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Es f\u00e1cil entender por qu\u00e9 a Skylar-Scott le inspira la idea de brindar una vida larga y saludable a beb\u00e9s que de otro modo no sobrevivir\u00edan.
