Oral Health of Children in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties

Recent data show that 17 percent of children in Santa Clara County and 11 percent of children in San Mateo County did not have dental insurance. Across the state, about one in four children suffer from tooth decay that goes untreated, according to a statewide assessment released in February 2006 by the Dental Health Foundation. Among 25 states nationally, only Arkansas had a worse rate of pediatric tooth decay than California. Dental problems are particularly acute among California's Latino children, who had higher rates of untreated cavities than other race/ethnicities.
