Ataviados con sus mejores atuendos campestres, cientos de pacientes y expacientes, familiares, personal del hospital y voluntarios se subieron a un carruaje tirado por caballos para la mejor fiesta del oeste: nuestro Baile de Graduaci\u00f3n anual del Hospital. La Escuela del Hospital se super\u00f3 este a\u00f1o, transformando la cafeter\u00eda en una aventura del Viejo Oeste digna de una pel\u00edcula de Hollywood. Entre nuestros muchos invitados de honor se encontraba uno de nuestros vaqueros favoritos, David, de 9 a\u00f1os, su h\u00e9roe paciente del Summer Scamper del Centro de Fibrosis Pulmonar y Qu\u00edstica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Aparte de ese bigote tan convincente, quiz\u00e1 reconozcan su foto: hace dos a\u00f1os, su hermana, Doris, fue nuestra anterior Paciente H\u00e9roe del Centro de Fibrosis Pulmonar y Qu\u00edstica. En 2014, Doris recibi\u00f3 su trasplante de pulm\u00f3n doble, pero la celebraci\u00f3n familiar se vio truncada cuando la salud de David decay\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cEl m\u00e9dico me llam\u00f3 y me dijo: &#039;Tenemos que hablar&#039;. Y yo le dije: &#039;No me preocupes&#039;\u201d, recuerda Corina, la madre de David. \u201cY entonces el m\u00e9dico dijo: &#039;S\u00ed, tenemos que preocuparnos&#039;\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">David ten\u00eda un pulm\u00f3n colapsado. Ten\u00eda que estar con ox\u00edgeno las 24 horas del d\u00eda, los 7 d\u00edas de la semana, y su actividad era extremadamente limitada. Al igual que su hermana, \u00e9l tambi\u00e9n necesitar\u00eda un trasplante de doble pulm\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">En Estados Unidos, solo se realizan entre 40 y 50 trasplantes de pulm\u00f3n pedi\u00e1tricos al a\u00f1o, y en nuestro hospital solo unos tres al a\u00f1o. La espera para encontrar un donante compatible pod\u00eda durar meses. Por supuesto, la familia Romero lo sab\u00eda: hab\u00edan esperado un a\u00f1o entero antes del trasplante de Doris. Pero despu\u00e9s de solo dos meses en la lista de espera, la familia de David recibi\u00f3 la llamada de que ten\u00edan un donante compatible, y en marzo David recibi\u00f3 sus nuevos pulmones. En dos semanas, David recibi\u00f3 el alta hospitalaria. Y ahora (dos meses despu\u00e9s) ya ha vuelto a hacer lo que le apasiona: jugar al f\u00fatbol, bromear con sus hermanas mayores y bailar en el baile de graduaci\u00f3n del hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cEstamos muy agradecidos cada d\u00eda\u201d, dice Corina. \u201cDavid siempre sonr\u00ede.
