Qiu ten\u00eda solo 10 a\u00f1os cuando su padre falleci\u00f3 en un accidente laboral. Lo enviaron a vivir con sus abuelos, quienes, aunque con escasos recursos, priorizaban su educaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFueron los mejores abuelos del mundo\u201d, recuerda Qiu. \u201cNo ten\u00edan estudios, pero valoraban la importancia de la educaci\u00f3n y me apoyaron para alcanzar mis sue\u00f1os\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Qiu destac\u00f3 acad\u00e9micamente, estudiando hasta 16 horas diarias y consiguiendo una plaza en una de las mejores escuelas de su regi\u00f3n. Su inter\u00e9s por la ciencia floreci\u00f3, y su trayectoria acad\u00e9mica lo llev\u00f3 a Estados Unidos, donde su investigaci\u00f3n capt\u00f3 la atenci\u00f3n nacional y apareci\u00f3 en la portada de la prestigiosa revista Cell.<\/p>\n<p>En diciembre de 2023, Qiu lleg\u00f3 a Stanford y se convirti\u00f3 en el cuarto miembro del equipo de la Iniciativa de Ciencias B\u00e1sicas e Ingenier\u00eda (BASE) del Centro Cardiovascular Infantil Betty Irene Moore, un programa de investigaci\u00f3n \u00fanico que busca comprender y, en \u00faltima instancia, curar las cardiopat\u00edas cong\u00e9nitas (CC). BASE re\u00fane a investigadores de diferentes disciplinas cient\u00edficas que colaboran en nuevos enfoques para abordar las cardiopat\u00edas cong\u00e9nitas, que afectan a 1 de cada 100 beb\u00e9s en EE. UU.<\/p>\n<p>Como profesor adjunto de gen\u00e9tica e inform\u00e1tica, Qiu utiliza la gen\u00f3mica unicelular y el aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico para abordar desaf\u00edos clave en la investigaci\u00f3n card\u00edaca. Los avances recientes permiten el estudio de millones de c\u00e9lulas simult\u00e1neamente para comprender c\u00f3mo se forman los \u00f3rganos. Sin embargo, a\u00fan es imposible saber con exactitud d\u00f3nde se ubica cada c\u00e9lula dentro del \u00f3rgano y rastrearlas a lo largo del tiempo. Qiu es pionero en enfoques para superar estos obst\u00e1culos y ayudar a los investigadores a crear un mapa, similar a Google Earth, que muestra d\u00f3nde y cu\u00e1ndo se desarrollan las enfermedades card\u00edacas a nivel celular.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCuando empec\u00e9, sab\u00eda que para comprender las enfermedades card\u00edacas, necesit\u00e1bamos saber cu\u00e1ndo y d\u00f3nde los genes empiezan a comportarse de forma diferente a como lo hacen en un coraz\u00f3n sano\u201d, afirma Qiu. \u201cObtener esas respuestas requerir\u00eda estudiar millones de c\u00e9lulas y miles de genes por c\u00e9lula a lo largo del tiempo y el espacio. Mi enfoque nos permite rastrear los genes expresados por c\u00e9lulas individuales por primera vez, lo que nos ayudar\u00e1 a saber qu\u00e9 c\u00e9lulas est\u00e1n asociadas con las enfermedades card\u00edacas y en qu\u00e9 punto exacto del desarrollo del coraz\u00f3n\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n de Qiu proporcionar\u00e1 al resto del equipo de BASE nuevos conocimientos sofisticados para aplicar en su trabajo.<\/p>\n<p>La Dra. Marlene Rabinovitch, directora de BASE y profesora de Cardiolog\u00eda Pedi\u00e1trica Dwight y Vera Dunlevie, est\u00e1 entusiasmada con los conocimientos que aporta Qiu. \u00abXiaojie est\u00e1 logrando algo nunca antes visto\u00bb, afirma Rabinovitch. \u00abSu experiencia \u00fanica, y la forma en que complementa el trabajo de todo el equipo de BASE, crea el potencial para transformar el campo y cambiar la vida de tantos ni\u00f1os\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>El cient\u00edfico de BASE, Mark Skylar-Scott, doctor, est\u00e1 entusiasmado con el potencial de la investigaci\u00f3n de Qiu. \u00abComo ingeniero de bioimpresi\u00f3n 3D, veo los mapas de Xiaojie como manuales de instrucciones para construir un coraz\u00f3n\u00bb, afirma Skylar-Scott. \u00abSu ingenio computacional es fundamental para el \u00e9xito de BASE\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Actualmente, Qiu se centra en aplicar sus nuevas tecnolog\u00edas para crear un mapa 3D del coraz\u00f3n de un rat\u00f3n, a medida que se desarrolla desde las primeras etapas hasta que alcanza su plena formaci\u00f3n.
