Timon ten\u00eda solo 12 a\u00f1os cuando muri\u00f3 de un tumor cerebral en 2024. Ante esta p\u00e9rdida inimaginable, sus padres, Yury Labintsev y Ekaterina Labintceva, est\u00e1n honrando la memoria de su hijo invirtiendo en investigaciones que podr\u00edan cambiar el futuro de otros ni\u00f1os que enfrentan un diagn\u00f3stico como el suyo.<\/p>\n

Gracias a una generosa donaci\u00f3n, la pareja ha creado el Premio Timon Labintcev para Tumores Cerebrales Pedi\u00e1tricos, que apoya una beca postdoctoral en el laboratorio de la Dra. Michelle Monje, PhD.<\/p>\n

L\u00edder mundial en su campo, Monje es la Profesor de Neurooncolog\u00eda Pedi\u00e1trica, Milan Gambhir <\/em>y profesora de neurolog\u00eda. El laboratorio de Salud Infantil de la Dra. Monje en Stanford Medicine est\u00e1 descubriendo nuevos conocimientos sobre c\u00f3mo el sistema nervioso impulsa el c\u00e1ncer. Su ensayo cl\u00ednico, que trata un c\u00e1ncer cerebral pedi\u00e1trico previamente incurable, ha logrado resultados sin precedentes, incluyendo un paciente que ha estado libre de c\u00e1ncer durante m\u00e1s de cuatro a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, el Laboratorio Monje ha descubierto que ciertas neuronas (c\u00e9lulas nerviosas) pueden favorecer el crecimiento, la propagaci\u00f3n y la resistencia al tratamiento de los tumores cerebrales pedi\u00e1tricos. La investigaci\u00f3n de la Dra. Byun se centra en un grupo espec\u00edfico de neuronas que liberan sustancias qu\u00edmicas relacionadas con el estr\u00e9s y env\u00edan se\u00f1ales a trav\u00e9s del cerebro. Mediante el estudio de c\u00f3mo estas neuronas se comunican con las c\u00e9lulas tumorales, busca identificar maneras de interrumpir las se\u00f1ales y frenar el crecimiento del c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n

El objetivo final de esta investigaci\u00f3n es ser pioneros en nuevas terapias para j\u00f3venes con tumores cerebrales agresivos para curar su c\u00e1ncer y ayudar a prevenir impactos neurol\u00f3gicos devastadores, como la p\u00e9rdida de la capacidad de caminar, hablar y comer.<\/p>\n
