Dianna y Timothy Murphy, de San Ram\u00f3n, creen en la solidaridad. Agradecidos de que su hijo de 18 a\u00f1os, Kevin, est\u00e9 vivo hoy gracias al Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford, ahora apoyan generosamente al hospital como miembros del C\u00edrculo de Cuidado Infantil.<\/p>\n

\u201cEntendemos la importancia de la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica vital y la necesidad de investigaci\u00f3n y educaci\u00f3n continuas\u201d, explica Dianna. \u201cDonamos al Fondo Infantil Lucile Packard para garantizar que este hospital pueda seguir brindando atenci\u00f3n excepcional a los ni\u00f1os necesitados\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hace apenas unos a\u00f1os, Kevin era uno de esos ni\u00f1os que recib\u00eda cuidados extraordinarios.<\/p>\n

La intuici\u00f3n de los padres les indic\u00f3 a Dianna y Timothy que Kevin, que entonces ten\u00eda 12 a\u00f1os, necesitaba ayuda cuando sus s\u00edntomas gripales no mejoraban. Tras an\u00e1lisis de sangre y traslados a varios centros, llegaron a nuestro hospital, donde los m\u00e9dicos les dieron un diagn\u00f3stico inesperado: Kevin ten\u00eda miocardiopat\u00eda dilatada. Su coraz\u00f3n hab\u00eda crecido dos tallas y media m\u00e1s de lo normal y estaba fallando, lo que tambi\u00e9n afectaba a otros \u00f3rganos, incluido el h\u00edgado. La \u00fanica soluci\u00f3n era un trasplante de coraz\u00f3n. Dianna y Timothy estaban devastados, pero confiaron en la experiencia de los cuidadores de Kevin.<\/p>\n

Durante las siguientes semanas, el equipo m\u00e9dico trabaj\u00f3 incansablemente para que Kevin estuviera lo suficientemente saludable para su procedimiento.<\/p>\n

Cuando hubo un donante de coraz\u00f3n disponible, un equipo quir\u00fargico, junto con Dianna y Timothy, traslad\u00f3 a Kevin en silla de ruedas por la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Pedi\u00e1tricos entre v\u00edtores y aplausos. La cirug\u00eda de trasplante, que dur\u00f3 cinco horas y media, fue un \u00e9xito. "Cuando por fin pudimos ver a Kevin despu\u00e9s de la cirug\u00eda, \u00a1nos sorprendi\u00f3 lo bien que se ve\u00eda!", recuerda Dianna.<\/p>\n

Hoy, Kevin corre atletismo en su escuela secundaria e incluso gan\u00f3 varias medallas de oro en los Juegos de Trasplantes de Am\u00e9rica. La familia Murphy contribuye a la comunidad hospitalaria que los apoy\u00f3 cuando m\u00e1s lo necesitaban. Adem\u00e1s de participar en el C\u00edrculo de Cuidado Infantil con donaciones econ\u00f3micas, Dianna es mentora de padres en nuestro hospital, brindando apoyo a otras familias que enfrentan problemas m\u00e9dicos similares y asegur\u00e1ndose de que participen activamente en el cuidado de sus hijos.<\/p>\n

\u201cEl Hospital Infantil Lucile Packard es muy especial\u201d, dice Dianna. \u201cNo solo por la nueva ampliaci\u00f3n del hospital, sino tambi\u00e9n por el personal que trabaja all\u00ed. Kevin no fue el primer trasplante de coraz\u00f3n del hospital y, lamentablemente, no ser\u00e1 el \u00faltimo.
