Hoy, utiliza su pasi\u00f3n por las pruebas de resistencia para recaudar fondos para investigaciones innovadoras en cardiolog\u00eda pedi\u00e1trica. Se tom\u00f3 un descanso de su entrenamiento para su pr\u00f3xima carrera de 100 kil\u00f3metros (62 millas) para charlar con nosotros sobre lo que lo mantiene motivado, \u00a1incluso en el kil\u00f3metro 96!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nuestra hija Kate, que entonces ten\u00eda 15 a\u00f1os, llevaba muchos a\u00f1os compitiendo en nataci\u00f3n con el equipo de Estados Unidos. El 30 de octubre de 2013, Kate estaba en un entrenamiento vespertino en la Universidad de Stanford; un entrenamiento m\u00e1s, como los que hab\u00eda hecho durante a\u00f1os. De repente, recibimos una llamada de su entrenador dici\u00e9ndonos que Kate estaba en ambulancia camino al Hospital de Stanford. Kate casi se desmaya durante el entrenamiento. Nuestra primera reacci\u00f3n fue pensar que los m\u00e9dicos nos dir\u00edan que estaba bien y que podr\u00edamos irnos a casa. Pero no fue as\u00ed. Entonces, esper\u00e1bamos un diagn\u00f3stico inmediato que pudiera tratarse de forma ambulatoria. En el peor de los casos, pens\u00e1bamos que le har\u00edan un par de pruebas y tal vez una inyecci\u00f3n, y nos ir\u00edamos a casa. Pero tampoco fue as\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>Kate ingres\u00f3 en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Cardiovasculares del Hospital Infantil Lucile Packard de Stanford. En alg\u00fan momento, comprendimos que poco pod\u00edamos hacer para cambiar nuestra nueva realidad m\u00e9dica. Nos reconfort\u00f3 saber que nuestra hija se encontraba en el entorno m\u00e1s seguro posible.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"no-caption\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13941 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/lpfch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Marra2-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"Father and daughter smiling at the camera.\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lpfch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Marra2-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lpfch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Marra2.jpg 522w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Desde el momento en que conocimos al Dr. Chris Almond y lo vimos interactuar con Kate, supimos que era el m\u00e9dico ideal para nosotros. Durante el \u00faltimo a\u00f1o y medio que ha atendido a Kate, hemos agradecido profundamente su apoyo. Cuando vamos a las citas, pr\u00e1cticamente no sentimos ansiedad; hay muchas sonrisas y confianza. Siempre s\u00e9 que podemos contar con el Dr. Almond para el cuidado de Kate.<\/p>\n<p>Mientras Kate estuvo ingresada, me apoy\u00e9 en mi entrenamiento de resistencia para sobrellevar la situaci\u00f3n. Me siento inc\u00f3modo al considerarme un &quot;atleta&quot;, as\u00ed que quiz\u00e1s me identifico m\u00e1s con las competiciones de resistencia (maratones, ultramaratones, ciclismo, nataci\u00f3n y triatlones). A menudo, mis carreras duran 24 horas o m\u00e1s, recorriendo cientos de kil\u00f3metros, a veces en entornos extremos. Cuando participo en una carrera de 100 kil\u00f3metros, no puedo asimilar la magnitud de la distancia, as\u00ed que simplemente corro un kil\u00f3metro y medio cada vez. Y luego otro kil\u00f3metro, y luego otro m\u00e1s. Utilizo el concepto de microobjetivos para alcanzar el objetivo principal. Cuando Kate estaba en el hospital, esto a menudo significaba simplemente llegar al siguiente procedimiento y luego aguantar hasta la hora de la cena, y as\u00ed sucesivamente.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando compito, pienso en la determinaci\u00f3n que vi y experiment\u00e9 en el hospital: la de los padres de exalumnos, el personal del hospital y m\u00e9dicos como el Dr. Almond, el Dr. Roth, el Dr. Rosenthal y muchos otros.<\/p>\n<p>Nos llena de alegr\u00eda informarles que Kate es una adolescente sana y feliz que ha sido aceptada en varias universidades con becas. Si bien no hay forma de agradecerle por completo al Dr. Almond y a su equipo el regalo de la salud que le han dado a Kate, puedo contribuir apoyando su investigaci\u00f3n sobre dispositivos de asistencia ventricular y ayudando a los pacientes de cardiolog\u00eda pedi\u00e1trica del Hospital Infantil Lucile Packard.
