Cuando mi hijo Ray ten\u00eda 4 a\u00f1os, ten\u00eda dificultades para hacer contacto visual con la gente y se obsesionaba con jugar con piedras al aire libre.<\/p>\n

Cuando nuestro m\u00e9dico nos dijo que Ray ten\u00eda autismo, mi esposo, Alan, y yo nos sentimos inseguros sobre el futuro, pero tambi\u00e9n aliviados. Ahora ten\u00edamos una explicaci\u00f3n para las peculiaridades de Ray. <\/p>\n

En ese momento viv\u00edamos en Washington y encontramos recursos muy limitados para ni\u00f1os con trastorno del espectro autista.<\/p>\n

Cuando Ray ten\u00eda 7 a\u00f1os, nos mudamos nuevamente al \u00c1rea de la Bah\u00eda e inmediatamente nos comunicamos con el Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford para recibir terapia ocupacional y f\u00edsica para Ray.<\/p>\n

Sus terapeutas ocupacionales nos animaron a unirnos a un grupo piloto de habilidades sociales que ayud\u00f3 a Ray a comprender sus emociones, tanto las suyas como las de los dem\u00e1s, y le ense\u00f1\u00f3 a autocontrolarse. Los terapeutas incluso llevaron a los ni\u00f1os a un parque para practicar en situaciones reales.<\/p>\n

Fue incre\u00edble ver a Ray interactuar con otros ni\u00f1os y verlos responderle con reacciones normales en lugar de confundirse o re\u00edrse de \u00e9l.<\/p>\n

Alan y yo siempre nos sorprendemos de la amabilidad del personal del hospital. Son una fuente inagotable de informaci\u00f3n sobre oportunidades para ni\u00f1os con autismo, como escuelas, actividades deportivas y grupos de padres, y nos ayudan a navegar por los numerosos sitios web, organizaciones y servicios disponibles para familias como la nuestra.<\/p>\n

Hoy, despu\u00e9s de varios a\u00f1os de trabajar con el equipo de Packard Children's, Ray es un estudiante de cuarto grado feliz y extrovertido.<\/p>\n

Es tres veces campe\u00f3n de la temporada en una liga local de bolos juvenil. Participa en los Lobatos Scouts y le encanta el golf, la nataci\u00f3n y los videojuegos.<\/p>\n

Es el ni\u00f1o de 10 a\u00f1os m\u00e1s valiente que conozco. El a\u00f1o pasado... Carrera de verano<\/a>Ray era el H\u00e9roe paciente para el autismo<\/a> Y super\u00f3 su miedo a los ruidos fuertes para ayudar a entregar los premios de las carreras en el escenario. Ya no tiene miedo de compartir c\u00f3mo se siente. Siempre est\u00e1 dispuesto a dar consejos a sus compa\u00f1eros de bolos y con frecuencia nos ayuda con los problemas de la computadora en casa.<\/p>\n

Como padres, Alan y yo tambi\u00e9n recurrimos al Centro de Autismo de Stanford. Su Programa de Atenci\u00f3n Plena para padres ha ampliado nuestra red y nos ha proporcionado nuevas habilidades, incluyendo t\u00e9cnicas para mantener la calma en situaciones estresantes, de modo que podamos centrarnos en ayudar a Ray a calmarse tambi\u00e9n. Tambi\u00e9n hemos conocido a otros padres que enfrentan desaf\u00edos similares y que nos ofrecen apoyo y sugerencias para ayudarles a afrontar diversas situaciones con Ray.<\/p>\n

En el futuro, trabajaremos con investigadores de Stanford en estudios para ayudar a los ni\u00f1os con autismo a comprender e interpretar mejor las emociones de los dem\u00e1s, brindando a Ray y a muchos otros a\u00fan m\u00e1s oportunidades.<\/p>\n
