En realidad, es una vieja conocida que lleva tiempo entre nosotros, pero que se anuncia como nueva y potencialmente revolucionaria: la inmunooncolog\u00eda. Esta ciencia, que en esencia es el sistema inmunitario del cuerpo, est\u00e1 armado para combatir el c\u00e1ncer, se remonta a m\u00e1s de un siglo. La onc\u00f3loga pedi\u00e1trica Crystal Mackall, MD, me comparti\u00f3 algunos antecedentes hist\u00f3ricos en este podcast individual:<\/p>\n<p>Hace m\u00e1s de 100 a\u00f1os, hubo intentos serios de controlar el sistema inmunitario. Esto surgi\u00f3 cuando se observaron espor\u00e1dicamente pacientes con infecciones no controladas \u2014claro, en aquel entonces no exist\u00edan los antibi\u00f3ticos actuales\u2014 que a veces presentaban remisiones o regresiones de sus tumores. As\u00ed que hab\u00eda una clara se\u00f1al de que algo en la respuesta inmunitaria pod\u00eda controlar el c\u00e1ncer. Pero el problema era que no se pod\u00eda controlar. Ocurr\u00eda espor\u00e1dicamente. La biolog\u00eda responsable era esquiva.<\/p>\n<p>Mackall, quien ha trabajado en este campo durante 26 a\u00f1os y lleg\u00f3 a Stanford en enero de 2016 procedente del NIH, donde dirigi\u00f3 la secci\u00f3n de Inmunolog\u00eda del Instituto Nacional del C\u00e1ncer, me cont\u00f3 sobre el per\u00edodo seco, cuando la ciencia era vista con escepticismo:<\/p>\n<p>Nosotros, los del campo de la inmunooncolog\u00eda, \u00e9ramos considerados buenos cient\u00edficos. Pero se nos consideraba marginales. No se nos tomaba en serio\u2026 Tuvimos dificultades para conseguir financiaci\u00f3n para la investigaci\u00f3n, aunque hab\u00eda sectores que s\u00ed cre\u00edan en ella. Trabaj\u00e9 en el Instituto Nacional del C\u00e1ncer en Bethesda, Maryland. Desde los a\u00f1os 80, han tenido un programa activo centrado en el desarrollo de la inmunoterapia. No quiere decir que no hubiera apoyo. Pero uno ten\u00eda que acostumbrarse a estar en la \u00faltima sesi\u00f3n del \u00faltimo d\u00eda de la reuni\u00f3n. No era el centro de atenci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Hoy, eso ha cambiado. De hecho, Mackall se ha beneficiado de una nueva subvenci\u00f3n de 10 millones de d\u00f3lares del nuevo Instituto Parker de Inmunoterapia contra el C\u00e1ncer del empresario y fil\u00e1ntropo Sean Parker.
