Amanda Sechrest se dej\u00f3 caer en la cama, agotada tras una larga noche de estudio para los ex\u00e1menes finales en el Saint Mary's College de California. Esa noche recibi\u00f3 una llamada del Hospital Infantil Lucile Packard de Stanford que le salvar\u00eda la vida. Hab\u00eda un coraz\u00f3n y un h\u00edgado disponibles para el trasplante que necesitaba con urgencia.<\/p>\n

\u201cMe qued\u00e9 sin palabras\u201d, dice sobre aquel momento, hace 10 a\u00f1os. \u201cMe dijeron: 'Ve al Hospital Infantil Packard lo m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido que puedas'\u201d.<\/p>\n

Amanda naci\u00f3 con un solo ventr\u00edculo card\u00edaco, en lugar de dos. Un tipo de cirug\u00eda a coraz\u00f3n abierto llamada procedimiento de Fontan le hab\u00eda prolongado la vida dos d\u00e9cadas, pero ahora la insuficiencia card\u00edaca y la disfunci\u00f3n hep\u00e1tica asociada la han puesto en la lista de espera para un trasplante.<\/p>\n

La cirug\u00eda de trasplante de coraz\u00f3n e h\u00edgado es un procedimiento complejo, de ocho a doce horas de duraci\u00f3n, que requiere una pericia quir\u00fargica excepcional y una coordinaci\u00f3n precisa entre los equipos de h\u00edgado y coraz\u00f3n, que operan simult\u00e1neamente.<\/p>\n

Afortunadamente para Amanda y pacientes como ella, el Hospital Infantil Packard ha realizado m\u00e1s de 15 trasplantes de coraz\u00f3n e h\u00edgado en las \u00faltimas tres d\u00e9cadas. Es un referente nacional en trasplantes de \u00f3rganos pedi\u00e1tricos y ha sido reconocido por sus excelentes resultados en trasplantes combinados.<\/p>\n

Formando conexiones especiales<\/p>\n

Al igual que la propia cirug\u00eda, la recuperaci\u00f3n de un trasplante de coraz\u00f3n e h\u00edgado es compleja. Por eso, Amanda se reun\u00eda semanalmente con su equipo m\u00e9dico multidisciplinario, quienes comprend\u00edan sus necesidades, le brindaban apoyo y se convirtieron en su familia. La animaban cuando sufr\u00eda contratiempos y pas\u00f3 la mayor parte de los dos a\u00f1os siguientes en el hospital, viendo c\u00f3mo otros pacientes regresaban a casa y retomaban sus actividades normales mientras ella afrontaba una larga recuperaci\u00f3n. El equipo estaba decidido a que Amanda recuperara su fortaleza, su salud y volviera a disfrutar de la vida.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmanda desarroll\u00f3 un v\u00ednculo especial con sus enfermeras y m\u00e9dicos\u201d, dice Lisa Hofmann Morgan, la madre de Amanda. \u201cNo creo que el resultado hubiera sido tan positivo sin su atenci\u00f3n, cari\u00f1o, compromiso y pasi\u00f3n por su importante trabajo\u201d.<\/p>\n

Durante su estancia, Amanda asisti\u00f3 al baile de graduaci\u00f3n de la Escuela del Hospital, una noche especial para pacientes de todas las edades y sus familias. \u201cEran una familia encantadora y me inclu\u00edan en todo\u201d, dice Amanda.<\/p>\n

Hoy, Amanda, de 30 a\u00f1os, vive en Idaho y cuenta los d\u00edas para otro momento importante: \u00a1su boda!
