Stanford researcher\u00a0<\/span>Xiaojie Qiu, PhD<\/span><\/a>, has been awarded a\u00a0<\/span>Moonshot Seed Grant<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from the Laude Institute.\u00a0Moonshots\u00a0provide\u00a0seed funding and multi-year labs to proven academic researchers who are using\u00a0artificial intelligence to take on species-level challenges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This first-ever\u00a0edition\u00a0of the competition, called Moonshots ONE, drew proposals from a remarkable pool\u2014Fields Medalists, Nobel laureates, and Turing Award recipients among them. Just eight teams were selected as seed grant winners across four categories of broad societal impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr.\u00a0Qiu and his team will receive $250,000 and\u00a0have\u00a0six months to develop a full proposal for the $10 million multi-year Moonshot lab.\u00a0Their project is titled \u201cThe Virtual Embryo: Predictive Modeling of Human Development and Congenital Defects.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This achievement did not happen in isolation. Donor support funded\u00a0the early-stage research on human embryonic development that made\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Qiu’s Moonshot proposal possible.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr.\u00a0Qiu joined Stanford in December 2023, becoming the fourth member of the BASE Initiative, a one-of-a-kind research program dedicated to understanding and\u00a0ultimately curing\u00a0congenital heart disease (CHD).\u00a0Learn more about\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Qiu\u2019s\u00a0research\u00a0and the BASE Initiative<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
