Long before our hospital opened its doors, she gave her time to places where children came to heal\u2014the\u00a0\u00a0Stanford Home for Convalescent Children and the former Children\u2019s Hospital at Stanford\u2014and developed a deep understanding of what it takes to deliver exceptional care for children and families. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Those years\u00a0shaped Lucile\u2019s lifelong commitment to children\u2019s health and fueled her founding vision for what would become Lucile Packard Children\u2019s Hospital Stanford, which opened in 1991.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This April, during National Volunteer Month, we are proud to announce a new honor that carries her name: the\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lucile Packard\u00a0Volunteer\u00a0Lifetime Achievement Award<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This award recognizes hospital volunteers whose years of dedicated service have made a lasting impact on our patients, families, and staff\u2014individuals who have given not just their time, but their whole selves to this community. It is the highest volunteer honor we can bestow at a hospital privileged to have over 500 dedicated volunteers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whether\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0reading a story to a child, cuddling newborn babies, or serving on our board,\u00a0these\u00a0volunteers are an important part of the extraordinary care we provide.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis award celebrates the power of volunteerism and honors Lucile Packard\u2019s lasting legacy: a legacy rooted in compassion, community, and the unwavering belief that every child deserves exceptional health care,\u201d says Maryellen Brady, director of volunteer services\u00a0at Packard Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On April 22, Lucile\u2019s granddaughter and Packard Children\u2019s Hospital board member Sierra Clark presented the inaugural award at an event in the hospital\u2019s Ford Family Staff Garden. Clark\u2019s presence was a meaningful reminder that Lucile\u2019s vision and values are alive and well, carried forward by those who knew and loved her, and by volunteers inside our hospital and across Stanford Medicine Children\u2019s Health. The event also celebrated volunteers who have reached 5, 10, 15, 20, and even 35-year anniversaries. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI want to express my gratitude to all the volunteers who are transforming what it means to deliver quality, compassionate care to children,\u201d says Clark. \u201cIt\u2019s not just in the care itself, it\u2019s in the people\u2014in the small moments of connection that make a hospital feel less clinical and more compassionate. It\u2019s a living reflection of what my grandmother believed in: that <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u043a\u0430\u043a\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we care matters just as much as what we do.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meet the\u00a0First Recipient: June\u00a0Hipschen<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">June\u00a0Hipschen\u00a0had\u00a0wanted to volunteer in a hospital\u00a0ever\u00a0since she was a\u00a0little girl.\u00a0Life had other plans\u2014a full career in corporate life came first\u2014but\u00a0when\u00a0retirement finally opened the door,\u00a0she embraced it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23880\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23880\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23880\" src=\"https:\/\/lpfch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/June-Hipschen-in-Gift-Shop-2-cropped-300x276.jpg\" alt=\"A smiling woman with gray hair and glasses stands behind the register in a gift shop, wearing a purple top and red lanyard. Wilma explained that the Gift Shop provides a warm, non-medical oasis where patients and family members can browse gifts, a few necessities, candy, and balloons\u2014with all proceeds going back to the hospital\u00a0to support research and care. Since then,\u00a0June\u00a0has logged more than\u00a04,100 hours\u00a0of service across the Gift Shop,\u00a0Roth Auxiliary (where she has served as\u00a0vice\u00a0president,\u00a0membership\u00a0chair, and\u00a0liaison to\u00a0volunteer\u00a0services), and\u00a0the Explorer Program,\u00a0guiding patients and visitors to their destinations during hospital construction.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cReceiving the\u00a0Lifetime\u00a0Achievement\u00a0Award is humbling, awesome, and completely surprising!\u201d says June. \u201cI am truly honored. I am part of a team of volunteers,\u00a0and we are all here together\u00a0for these\u00a0kids\u2014to\u00a0let\u00a0them\u00a0know how much\u00a0they really matter. And to support the parents, who are the real heroes.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">June\u2019s greatest joy is selling a plush animal or a doll to a patient, then\u00a0telling them that this special plush requires lots of hugs and asking them to show her their hug. She loves seeing young faces light up as they squeeze their new toy.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cJune\u00a0Hipschen\u00a0is the perfect recipient for the Lucile Packard Lifetime Achievement Award.
