On September 4, Hyundai Hope On Wheels® and Palo Alto-area Hyundai dealers awarded Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford a $250,000 Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant to support the work of Kathy Sakamoto, MD, PhD. Dr. Sakamoto’s research focuses on identifying pathways that cause acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and could lead to more effective approaches to treat children with ALL.
This year marks a special milestone in our partnership with Hyundai: since 2004 our hospital has received more than $1 million from the Hope On Wheels program.
“We are grateful for the continued support of Hyundai, one of our long-time corporate donors, as they help us achieve our goal of finding a cure for childhood cancer,” said Dr. Sakamoto, who is also director of the Bass Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases.
The $250,000 grant to Dr. Sakamoto was officially presented during a Hope On Wheels Handprint Ceremony to honor children affected by cancer.
“First, I want to thank all the doctors, nurses, and staff of Lucile Packard for their dedication to the fight against cancer,” said 19-year-old patient Wesley Tiu, who spoke at the event and described how he has benefited from our hospital’s expert care and innovative research. “Second, I want to thank companies like Hyundai for making generous donations in supporting research and development of cures for cancer.
Hyundai’s gift will surely benefit many of the children whose lives have been affected by cancer. On behalf of all those children–past, present, and future–thank you.”
