Last week, we hosted an online panel with experts from Stanford Medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital on Safely Reopening Our Community, Economy, and Schools.
Mary Leonard, MD, chair of pediatrics, shared updates from Packard Children’s response, including the impact of COVID-19 on one of our medically fragile patients. Yvonne (Bonnie) Maldonado, MD, a pediatrician and epidemiologist, shared what we are learning about the virus in children, encouraging results from a study of self-swabbing tests, and what it might take to return to some sense of normalcy. And finally, C. Jason Wang, MD, PhD, a pediatrician and health research and policy expert, shared his work on a toolkit for policymakers to weigh risks and benefits of reopening the economy, and next steps on guidelines for reopening schools.
“The question of how to reopen schools … as a pediatrician this is important to me,” said Dr. Wang. “We hope to create policies and procedures to do it safely.”

As Dr. Leonard said, the kids we care for need us now more than ever. We are deeply grateful for close friends like you, whose support enables us to have the greatest impact in our community and around the world.
