Now a year into the process, the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) Unwinding, through which many policies put in place during the pandemic ended or changed, has resulted in more than 22,700,000 Americans losing their Medicaid coverage. Of those, 5.13 million are children.

For families of children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), any lapse in health care coverage could have devastating impacts. This is particularly concerning for children of color, many of whom are covered by Medicaid and face additional barriers to accessing health care.
