Stanford’s Chariot Program eases anxiety with AI, VR, and robot dogs
Anxiety, panic attacks, and a fear of doctors. These are common side effects for kids who need anesthesia, shots, or other procedures—and they can last a lifetime.
The Chariot Program at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford is changing the narrative, one virtual reality headset and robot dog at a time. Using technology, Chariot helps patients feel less anxiety, manage pain, heal, and even have fun during tough moments.
Chariot reaches every corner of the hospital, supporting patients, siblings, parents, and care team members. And now the program’s impact extends far beyond our hospital, bringing comfort and restoring normalcy to children and families around the world.

Leading in Immersive Tech
Founded in 2015, Chariot has developed more than 20 immersive technology applications. The first VR game they developed uses a headset to control a virtual penguin named Pebbles—and helps kids stay still for procedures like IV placements, cast removals, and wound care. Pebbles soon took on a second job: as the Chariot mascot!

Relief for Parents, Too
In a recent study, parents and caregivers who used a VR meditation app developed by Chariot felt less anxious while their kids were in the hospital. The biggest benefit was seen among parents who speak primarily Spanish.

A Global Impact, Rooted in Research
To date, the team has published more than 70 scientific papers and recruited more than 2,500 people to participate in research studies. Chariot offers licensing agreements to its software to any hospital upon request, helping to establish similar programs at more than 40 institutions around the world.

Toys and Games as a Distraction
Loona and Charlie are friendly robot dogs who provide company, sing songs, and dance with kids. Toys and games are also strategically incorporated into care during stressful moments. When kids say goodbye to their parents before surgery, they can even drive away in a remote-controlled pink Jeep or sports car.
100% Funded by Philanthropy
The team’s important work is powered by the Packard Children’s donor community. With continued support, Chariot will forge ahead to shape the future of health care through immersive technology.
