Kohl’s Partnership with Packard Keeps Kids Safe

Kohl’s Cares for Kids® Supports Free Car Seat Checks

STANFORD, Calif. – On Saturday, February 6, Kohl’s Department Stores will host a car seat safety event at its recently opened Redwood City store from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital’s certified technicians, bilingual in English and Spanish, will inspect car seats and provide free training for parents on how to install a car seat properly.

To date, Kohl’s has donated over $400,000 to fund safety and outreach efforts at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. The commitment is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares for Kids® program, which raises funds for children’s hospitals through the year-round sale of books and plush. From now until the end of May, Kohl’s will feature four special-edition plush animals and five books, which are available for just $5 each at more than 1,000 Kohl’s stores nationwide and online at Kohls.com.

In 2009 alone, Kohl’s donated nearly $120,000 in proceeds to support the Kohl’s Child Safety and Outreach Program at Packard. In addition to car seat fitting, the program supports other community outreach programs that teach the importance of safety measures, such as wearing bike helmets and understanding shaken baby syndrome.

Packard’s Maggie Adalyn Otto Safely Home Car Seat Fitting Station, one of the few programs in California based at a children’s hospital, was initiated after a pilot study showed that parents who watch a technician install their child’s car seat are more likely to remember how to do it safely themselves. Packard’s child passenger safety technicians receive intense training provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and have installed more than 10,000 car seats since the program’s inception in November 2004.

“Kohl’s commitment to San Mateo and Santa Clara counties helps ensure that more children are safely buckled up,” said Nancy Sanchez, Packard’s manager of community relations. “Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital is grateful to Kohl’s for its leadership support.”

Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under. Child car seats and safety belts, when installed and used correctly, can prevent injuries and save lives. Yet experts estimate that four out of five car seats are installed incorrectly.

Kohl’s Redwood City is located at 250 Walnut Street, at the corner of Veterans Boulevard and Walnut Street. Parents can make an appointment for a car seat fitting by calling (650) 736-2981.
