Roundtable on Young Adults with Chronic Medical Conditions
Organization: Generation Patient
Primary Contact: Sneha Dave
Grant Amount: $127,088 for 14 months
Date Awarded:
Purpose
Young adults with lifelong medical conditions face challenges beyond immediate physical health concerns that may result in ongoing health impacts, economic sacrifice, and decreased opportunities for employment and community involvement.
Through this grant, Generation Patient will build on previous Foundation-funded work to create a multi-stakeholder learning community composed of patients, health care professionals, caregivers, researchers, advocates, policymakers, and others. This learning community will host 6-8 virtual roundtable discussions focused on: 1) financial instability and income volatility; 2) the transition from pediatric to adult health care; 3) dismissal of concerns and ableist and ageist misconceptions; and 4) unique mental health needs.
After each roundtable, Generation Patient will develop proceedings to summarize each session’s key insights and recommended strategies to address the issues. Young adults with chronic conditions will co-author the proceedings, which will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, a dedicated website, and social media. Disseminating the findings across sectors will raise awareness of the needs of young adult patients, ultimately contributing to systemic changes and improving quality of life and access to care for this population.
