No Place to Hide: Children Will be Hurt by Medicaid Cuts

Medicaid covers nearly half of all children with special health care needs. Despite extensive research showing that Medicaid coverage for children contributes to better health outcomes and improved long-term effects on health and educational attainment in adulthood, Congress is actively considering large reductions in Medicaid through the budget reconciliation process.

Major Medicaid funding reductions, if enacted, will inevitably put children’s health and well-being at risk, given the extent to which children rely on Medicaid. The federal proposals continue to evolve and include imposing caps on federal Medicaid funding, eliminating the enhanced federal funding states receive, mandating work reporting requirements as a condition of eligibility, and other actions that would have major implications for children and families’ access to essential care and services.
