Strengthening Medicaid and CHIP Programs to Serve CSHCN
Organization: National Academy for State Health Policy
Primary Contact: Neva Kaye
Grant Amount: $73,853 for 6 months
Date Awarded:
Purpose
To disseminate the Foundation’s national consensus standards for systems of care for CSHCN to state leaders of Medicaid and Child Health Insurance Programs for children, and to increase the attention of state public health financing program leaders to the special needs of children with chronic and complex health care problems.
Outcome
State Medicaid programs are the dominant source of financing for medical care for children and youth with special health care needs, yet few such programs are knowledgeable about this population. State Title V programs have an oversight and sometimes management role in the systems that serve these children, and their professional organization, Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs, has released a national consensus framework and standards for systems of care for CYSHCN. This project brought together state Medicaid and Title V staff members from 28 states to discuss the health care needs of children with chronic and complex health conditions, the standards for systems responsible for their care, care coordination and other related topics. The National Academy for State Health Policy posted a blog on their website summarizing the meeting and its key themes.
