Patient- and Family-Centered Care and Partnerships During COVID-19

Organization: Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care

Primary Contact: Beverley Johnson

Grant Amount: $50,000 for 6 months

Date Awarded:

Purpose

As hospitals and other pediatric programs respond and adapt to new and challenging conditions resulting from the effects of COVID-19, a demand has emerged for best practice guidelines and resources to assist in implementing Patient- and Family-Centered Care (PFCC) principles. This grant will help create a trustworthy “clearinghouse” to identify, develop, and disseminate reliable and vital information on emerging COVID-19 issues related to PFCC approaches to the pandemic. The information will be distributed internationally.

Outcome

The Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care (IPFCC) observed, documented, and shared pediatric best practices to address key issues emerging during the COVID pandemic. A broad cross section of pediatric facilities have responded with creativity to preserve the commitment to patient- and family-centered care and authentic partnerships with patients and families. Emerging best practices were shared widely with the field through informal conversations, webinars, and newsletters. IPFCC hopes to broaden this dissemination through their website, education outreach, and collaborative relationships with strategic partners. Their findings on how pediatric health care settings have responded to the mental health needs of children and families during the pandemic were published in Pediatric Nursing.
